So now I'm up to 2.5 miles at a time running. I've been reliably informed by many other runners that once I go over 3 miles I'll start to drop some weight. Oh yes please!
In my previous musings I told you how I prepared over October and November for running. Well now let's look at December.
I was up to 2.5 miles comfortably, and feeling at the end of it as if I could go on a bit more. Then bugger, got a cough from inhaling someone's poorly aimed aerosol deodorant and that was that for 2 weeks. Exercise induced asthma is a sod at the best of times, but after inhaling a lung full of deodorant it's a real pain in the proverbial. No more runing for me over the festive break. Huh! And I was planning on some serious chocolate over-indulgence.
It's a common sight in gyms all over the country, 'hard' people thinking that they are tough working out with colds, coughs, etc. But it's not, it's stupid, really stupid. If you are suffering from anything that affects you from the neck down then you should not exercise as you will put an enormous strain on your body, your immune system and your heart.
Over-exercise will depress the immune system, so if it's already challenged with an illness then piling on a bit more strain is really not very bright. Your heart won't thank you for straining it either.
So I repeat, if you have any illness that affects you from the neck down, don't exercise. Plus how many people in the gym want your germs anyway?
Caution: As with all exercise, if you haven't exercised for some time, or if you have any medical conditions, you should see your physician first for a checkup. Tell them what you are planning to do so they can advise based on any medical history you might have.
